We have spent six out of our last seven summer holidays in the Austrian Alps, walking from hut to hut. These huts are more like mountain hostels, sometimes accommodating more than a hundred people, and offering basic dormitory style sleeping quarters, hot food and drink. They are run by the Austrian Alpine Club, which even has a British Section.
We have not got round to scanning in any of our own photos yet, but in the meantime you can have a look at some of the huts we have stayed in, courtesy of the Alpine Club's own website:
Hochlandhütte: The first we ever stayed in, actually in Germany near to the Austrian border.
Lizumer Hütte: One of the smallest huts we have been in.
Furtschaglhaus: Up near the glaciers in the Zillertaler Alps, on the Austrian/Italian border.
Hanauer Hütte: Hut in the Lechtaler Alps.
Bremer Hütte: Fairly small hut in the Stubai Alps.
Winnebachseehütte: In the western Stubai, beside a small lake and waterfall.
Simonyhütte: Outside the hut there were dog kennels for about 30 huskies!
Prielschutzhaus: We stayed here the night before the full eclipse in 1999.
Tübinger Hütte: In the Silvretta Alps, near the Swiss border.
